In the past, learning street level language for different parts of the world I've not had a lot of luck with audio lessons, or books. The problem seems to be, I think, my horrendous Aussie accent and inflection. I can't get good feedback on what I think I hear compared to what I think I've said.

This is where I found a dalliance with Rosetta Stone (French) most useful. The recent versions of this course material take your spoken response to the lessons and analyse them for correct (or reasonable) pronounciation.

Usually when in-country somewhere after a week or so I start to pick up small words and things grow from there, but for whatever reason, I just can't fathom it, I'm really struggling with Thai. Struggling to understand and to be understood. I'm certain I need a local tutor, who is patient, to help me get over this hump and start pronouncing more clearly.

A couple of questions .

1 You are an Aussie I presume ? As you mention our atricous accent :)

2 Try Learning Hungarian or Finnish that will surely do your head in :)

I have a good mate (currently in Sydney ) who is Thai and worked for His Majesty as well as our Government .Therefore his idiom and accent will teach rather polite and VERY proper Thai .

Also my wife is Thai and speaks appropriate Thai . If you are going or intend to do business in the Kingdom my opinion and experience is to learn (at first) very polite and proper Thai. As you call it "street level "languages sometimes certain words can turn out to be VERY inapropriate and a deal or genuine commercial relationship deal breaker .

Also in my experience courtesy or at least the effort at it goes a very long way . AT ALL levels .

I will as time allows do some research on aids for you that are current . Also our translator in Thailand has a PHD and Teaches Thai at a number of Thai Unis and he is a rough as guts Aussie (ex Military same as me ) lovely bloke but every thai I meet and speak to about him says he speaks better Thai than they :) Also writes beautifully (they say )

He started at age 45 and actually made similar commenst as you.

Keep at it (although I have lost 80 % of my linguistic skills over the decades ) it is rewarding .
