The World Health Organization has done it again! A scare campaign over use of mobile phones and brain cancer. The report released by the World Health Organization says radio frequency electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phones are “possibly carcinogenic to humans”. Their International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said heavy usage could lead to a possible increased risk of glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer.

Of course this was then picked up by the media, with the above scaremongering being given publicity. If ever there was a way to capture attention it is to quote research from a world body and slip in the word “cancer”. But remember to give yourself a let-out clause by using the word “possible”. Once you put “possible” into the label, you cannot be held responsible as you didn’t actually say that something “did” cause cancer, only “possibly”.

Now I do not know how many mobile phones are in use in the world, but it is estimated as being over five billion. The number for Thailand, where every child out of nappies gets a mobile after the dummy is worn out, is over 56 million hand sets (and represents 90 percent of the population), surely enough to produce brain cancer in every man, woman and child over the age of two. However, we are nothing like Saudi Arabia where the estimate is that 150 percent of the population has a phone to the ear and another one in the pocket. Or perhaps applied to the other ear?

Interestingly, Associate Professor Rodney Croft from the Australian Centre for Radiofrequency Bioeffects Research thinks further research will prove there is no need for alarm. “There are clearly a lot of things that we normally consume in our daily lives that IARC has said, we really don’t have enough evidence to be sure [if it causes cancer], but there is a possibility,” Professor Croft said. When asked if he thought mobile phones caused cancer, he said: “No, I don’t.”

What is not said in all these shock, horror headlines, is that these research chappies in the hallowed halls of academia need finance to keep going, and they are all in competition with each other to grab a slice of the research dollar. The more shock, horror headers they can get, the more likely they are to get further funding. It is the money train again.

Now there are groups doing genuine research into the malaises of mankind, and the influence of cholesterol on cardiac deaths is a classic example. The Framingham study kicked it all off, and it has been progressively studied since then. High cholesterol is an adverse factor as far as your cardiac condition is concerned. Believe it. And is unaltered by mobile phone use. Believe that one too. And if you are having a cup of coffee while reading this, caffeine is also considered “possibly carcinogenic.”

Beware of ‘scientific breakthroughs’ reported in the popular press. It may just be fishing for funding.
