Bangkok Prep’s students bring Booker Prize-winning novel to stage
The senior students at Bangkok Prep’s drama department have adapted the 2003 Man Booker Prize-winning novel, Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre into a stage play which is being performed at the school’s auditorium during
December 2nd- 4th 2013.
This is an abstract play which draws on the use of split scene, direct address and multi role, among other explorative strategies. The props and set are minimal and suggestive and the Black Box drama studio allows for a level of intimacy between audience and actors which suits the play's themes and setting. The young performers aim to make audiences laugh, cry and certainly think!
The story is about 15-year old Vernon Little, whose best friend, Jesus Navarro commits suicide after killing sixteen of his schoolmates. Suspicion falls on Vernon, who becomes something of a scapegoat in his small hometown of Martirio, Texas. The absurdities of an unjust world are stacked against him. Fearing the death penalty, he goes on the run to Mexico where he attempts to meet up with an old friend, Taylor Figueroa, to start a new life. Dreaming of a beach hut just like in the movies, more bodies appear and the Bar-B-Chew Barn - almost a character in its own right - sets up a local SWAT team to hunt him down. He is betrayed and martyred. And all his mother can do is eat her joy cakes and pray for a side-by-side fridge, “special edition.”
