Why the New Google Nexus Smartphone Will Kill the iPhone 5

Posted by Mike Tirone - Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

You've seen the commercial recently or heard the story or even experienced this frustration yourself:

You have just bought the newest smartphone, say the iPhone 4, and you're the coolest person around walking back from the Mac Store. Then you see advertisements for the iPhone 5 coming out soon.

Your brand new phone is now obsolete.

We've all been there and just when you thought that the trend of electronics, specifically phones, starts to slow down in the turnover rate, Google (GOOG) throws there hat into the ring.

But I'm here to ease your mind and tell you that Google's new Nexus 4G is scheduled for a Thanksgiving release date – nearly three months after the Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5 is released. But you can mark on your calendar that this Thanksgiving will be the last day you have to buy a smartphone...

The Google Nexus 4G will be the greatest smartphone ever made and is already getting a tremendous amount of buzz on the Internet. There is an array of new phones planned to be released in the near future, including Samsung's Hercules which is being released in August and has been self-proclaimed as the “iPhone killer” of smartphones.

But the Google Nexus 4G AT&T has “mind-blowing features” that will oust the iPhone and the rest of the competitors. Here's how:

Screen Size:

Apple's iPhone 5 is expected to increase its screen size to a edge-to-edge 3.7 to 4-inch curved glass, just .2 inches more than it's previous model. This screen will likely have 960 x 640 resolution.

The Google Nexus 4G AT&T will have a 4.5-5-inch screen with edge-to-edge video calling and 1280 x 800 resolution and 720 pixels of High Definition.

Result: Nexus has more capability with a significantly larger screen. Point Nexus.

Operating System:

When the Google Nexus 4G AT&T is released, it will be the first ever Android smartphone to support Android 4.0.

The closest competitor to such a powerful operating system is Apple's iPhone 5 iOS 5 platform. The rest of the competitors being released in the next six months will be running much older versions of the Android OS.

Result: Android 4.0 and Apple's iOS 5 will both be the best in their class, strictly based on user comfort and preference. Draw.

Camera:

The Nexus 4G AT&T will have a 5 megapixel rear camera with 1080 pixel HD video recording and playback. This will have sensor support and optimum output in low-light situations, one of the many downfalls of previous competitors, iPhone or smartphones. The front-facing 1 megapixel camera on the Nexus will be for wide-screen video chat while also having enhanced S 3D video capability for 3D display and 3D recording.

The iPhone 5 camera will have higher resolution than the Nexus, 8 megapixels with dual-LED flash and 1080 pixel video playback and panoramic photo capture.

Result: There is nothing in the talks of HD recording, playback, or sensor support and low-light shooting with the iPhone 5. A big loss in this round for the iPhone. Point Nexus.

Processor:

The Google Nexus 4G AT&T phone will sport one of the fastest processors in all of smartphones, a dual-core Snapdragon 1.5 GHz processor along with 1GB or RAM. In basic terms, this lightening fast processor will have the ability to run at 2.5GHz per core at the minimum power, which will be more than a hundred times faster than your average computer... but it fits in your pocket.

Apple's iPhone will have between 1.2-1.5GHz, without a Snapdragon processor.

Result: Nexus in a landslide.

Other Features:

The Nexus 4G will have 4G LTE Radio connectivity and NFC (Near Field Communication) support.

Many iPhone and smartphone publications and chat rooms have pinned down that if the iPhone 5 does not have LTE connectivity, they may lose brand loyalty, as 4G LTE is very important to users.

Apple has yet to announce any news on the iPhone 5 supporting 4G LTE.

Result: Google Nexus takes the cake if the iPhone 5 does not have 4G LTE.

Conclusion: By the looks of discussions online and the projective specs for both these phones, it would be difficult to say that the iPhone 5 will continue its reign as the superior phone. The Google Nexus 4G AT&T will change the smartphone game.
