The official grand opening celebration of the new Anglo Singapore International School’s campus will be held on August 27th 2012 in Sukhumvit Soi 64 and presided over by Education Minister Prof Dr Suchart Thadathamropngvech and Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore Mrs. Chua Siew San.

The opening marks the school’s 9th year anniversary as it hosts the 3rd Thailand World Schools Debating Championship. This is the first time that schools from around the world have been invited to participate.

The Anglo Singapore International School Debate Society has been active in the debating community of Thailand for the past two years. The school’s student debaters won the Grand Champions of the 7th European Union Thailand Inter-varsity Debate Championship in 2011, as well as several top ten best speakers’ awards in Thailand and Asia since 2010.

During August 22nd-28th, over 200 high-school students, ages 14-18 years, from 9 countries will participate in the debating competition under the theme, “Colour Your Soul: Bridging the Conflict Divide”. The participating countries include China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, South Africa and Thailand. Internationally renowned adjudicators will also participate in this contest.

Eight Thai schools will be competing in English against other countries. Anglo Singapore International School aims to showcase the Thai youth’s English speaking skills and to bridge the language and cultural gap with other ASEAN countries.

The winning team will receive the royal trophy, bestowed by HRH PrincessMaha ChakriSirindhorn.

“With this event, Anglo Singapore International School is hoping to demonstrate that differences can be resolved through tolerance and understanding, especially learning the importance of effective communication in various situations. This tournament will challenge all participants to engage in a productive discourse with peers from all over the world. We want all the students to explore and enjoy this journey. Debate is a major tool for communication and discussion on local and as well as international arena,” said Julie Sutanto, Director of Anglo Singapore International School.
